Liv’s Top 5 Oscar 2019 Standout Speeches

  1. Rami Malek’s Acceptance Speech

Magic. His genuine bliss was pure magic. Malek began with the obvious choice of thanking his mother, a women who immigrated from Egypt to America and gave her children the chance to live their dreams. Malek’s charm continued to shined through as he hilariously thanked Fox by saying “I may not have been the obvious choice but I guess it worked out.” And to top the speech off he made our hearts melt as he thanked his co-star (and current girlfriend) Lucy Boynton for being the heart of this film, for her talents, and for capturing his own heart. *swoon*

2. Regina King’s Acceptance Speech

My heart will always beam with joy when I see a strong and successful African-American woman represent and make history in her field of work. Regina King is the definition of class, strength, and perseverance. A moment I adored was when King began to thank her mother. The camera panned over to show the tear-filled pride and joy in her mother’s eyes while King thanked her for teaching her that “God is always leaning, and always has been leaning in my direction.” 🙌🏽

p.s.- Can we take a moment to talk about how big of a gentleman Chris Evans was when he assisted Regina up the staircase to accept her Oscar 😍

3. Hannah Beachler’s Acceptance Speech

History was made by her nomination, and history was made by her win. The actors and actresses of Black Panther watched with awe and pride as Beachler began to thank Ryan Coogler for “giving her air, humanity, and brotherhood.” Her speech finished with a piece of advice from a wise women who said “I give the strength to all of those who come next to keep going, to never give up, and you think it’s impossible remember to say this – a piece of advice I got from a very wise women – I did my best and my best is good enough.” Wakanda forever 👑

4. Olivia Coleman’s Acceptance Speech

Following the shock of winning (because everyone, including Coleman, thought Glenn Close would win for her role in The Wife) Olivia Coleman delivered a speech fulled with humbleness, humour, and humility. It was, in my opinion, the speech of the night. Coleman thanked Close by expressing to her that she’s an idol and with humour said “this is not how I wanted it to be, I think you’re amazing and I love you very much.” Then to top it all off Coleman saw Lady Gaga in the crowd, and with a blow of a kiss thanked her out of spontaneity and excitement before she exited the stage with her Academy Award.

5. Spike Lee’s Acceptance Speech

As soon as Samuel L. Jackson opened his mouth to announce the winner you could tell by the excitement in his voice. Spike Lee’s speech was filled with many influential and importance historic references. He thanked his ancestors who were slaved. “I give phrase to ancestors who built this country.” He thanked his grandmother who saved 50 years of social security cheques to put him through college and NYU graduate film studies. As Lee ended his speech he give reference to the 2020 Presidential election by proclaiming to everyone “to make the moral choice between love verses hate. Let’s do the right thing!” The statement was followed by a standing ovation by the crowd. What a night.
