How Ariana Grande’s Lyrics In ‘Thank u, next’ Give Us Valuable Break-Up Advice

Screen Shot 2018-11-08 at 5.24.14 PMHave you listened to Ariana Grande’s new song ‘Thank you, next” over a hundred times like I have?

I have been playing this song on repeat since she dropped it out of nowhere Saturday night. If you haven’t heard this pop anthem yet, I suggest you listen to it before reading any further.

Ariana’s lyrics speak to my past and current self. ‘Thank you, next’ is a break-up song unlike others. This song is not the classic broken-hearted and crying on the floor, or post-break-up self liberation kind of song. Her lyrics are positive, honest and true. This song is a reminder to everyone, single or not, that there is value in a break-up. 💔

“One taught me love, one taught me patience, and one taught me pain.”

Within the lyrics Ariana shares the qualities that she has learned and developed through each relationship she had been in. Reflection on what you learned from a relationship is something I can relate to. For example, one of my exes (of the three total) left me incredibly heart-broken, BUT I can honestly say that it gave me an incredible sense of strength and resiliency that I did not know I had.

“I’ve loved and I’ve lost, but that’s not what I see, so look what you got me, look what you taught me.”

A different ex taught me how to push myself to be the best and chase after my dream. I met him just before I entered into graduate school. His personal philosophies on life, success, and motivations really helped to prepare me to start focusing on how to achieve my goals in life. Our insightful conversations helped me think in new and creative ways, and he always encouraged me to go after my dreams (including with growing the blog content).

I have to give a shoutout to my first boyfriend who is a loyal reader of my blogs. He is still such a sweetheart and he taught me what it’s like to be in a relationship. (He also taught me how to ice skate but that’s beside the point). ☺️

“But this one gon’ last, ‘cause her name is Ari.”

SELF LOVE. SELF LOVE. SELF LOVE. In this lyric Ariana reminds us that a relationship with yourself is so important, especially post-break up. After a break-up you sometimes feel alone and broken, but like in Ariana’s lyrics, she reminds us of the beautiful things you learn post-break-up, “I’ve got so much love, got so much patience, I’ve learned from the pain, I turned out amazing.”

Changing your mindset to self-love during this time can be hard and can be a challenge, but if you take an end of a relationship as a learning experience than really you have the chance to reflect, grow, and be grateful for the lessons learned from that relationship.

So thank you Miss Grande for putting out not only a fire track, but also another track that your fans can relate to. 🙌🏾😘
