5 Simple & Effective Habits to Add into Your New Year Routine

We are officially one week into 2020 and I still find it pretty crazy that we have begun a new decade!

A New Year typically symbolizes the formation of New Year’s resolutions, but apparently many people have given up with this tradition and treat a new year just like any other day.

I think that’s fine and everything BUT maybe we can change our perspective on making New Year resolutions and begin to make what I will call “New Year Additions.” About a month ago I began to implement the following “additions” into my daily routine, and it has made such a positive difference with my daily well-being, my body, and my mind.

Create a Bedtime Routine

anastasia-dulgier-AklIXRucGTw-unsplashFor me, this routine begins with washing my face while a relaxing Spotify playlist is playing in the background such as, Calm Vibes by Spotify. Then I use my yoga blocks and scarf to stretch out my legs, lower back & neck. Following the stretching I either light a candle or spray my pillow with an aromatherapy pillow mist. Finally I tuck into bed, keep my cell phone off to the side, and fall into sleep [often with Netflix in the background.] 🌜

Begin with 5 minutes before bed. Start with areas that feel tight (eg lower back, neck, shoulders) then move onto creating a daily routine. This helps release pressure from tight areas, prevent injury, and I find it helps me sleep better. I also encourage the exercise go-ers to make sure that they include the appropriate amount of time to stretch following a workout.

Use less plastic

Some examples I’ve done in my own life are: Keep an eco-friendly grocery bag in my car so that even on a last minute trip to the store I don’t have to purchase a plastic bag. Bring reusable containers to Bulk Barn. [Pro tip: glass is easy because you can see through it and you know it’s clean.] Carry a reusable bottle with you to stop using plastic water bottles. I know they can be expensive but I promise you it’s worth the splurge. 🌲🌼🌎🌻

Move your body

Go outside for a walk, exercise, participate in sports, yoga, etc. Moving your body also moves your mind and keeps you feeling like a well oiled machine. 30 minutes a day is ideal, BUT if you are absolutely pressed for time then try to squeeze in even 10 or 15 minutes.

1-minute of mindful breathing

IMG_1808This action is SO simple and can make a BIG impact on your brain and body. Personally, I use an app called Calm and go to the section called “breathing exercises,” and follow a 1-2 minute mindful breathing exercise. I challenge you to begin with one minute a day. Once you feel like you can achieve mindful breathing for one-minute try to get up to two, three, four minutes, etc etc. You can also set a timer on your phone! Easy-peasy.

So maybe you’re not crazy on resolutions, but just try adding a new habit into your daily routine that will benefit your health and your well-being. You can try one of mine or add one of your own – either way it’s not too late to start “New Year Addition.” Best of luck! ✨💜
